What if your relationship could explode at any moment?

You may not know, but your relationship is filled with a number of "hot button" topics. If you end up pressing one of those buttons, even by accident, it could change or even destroy your relationship.

By knowing what these topics are, you can learn how to either avoid them or deal with them. Here are the biggest hot button topics worth worrying about.

Priority Problems

If we had to pick the biggest issue, here it is -- priority problems. Specifically, the problem of one partner feeling like they are not a priority to another partner.

Most partners try to balance their romantic relationships with things like work responsibilities, hobbies, and ongoing education. But if one partner feels like they are no longer getting enough attention, it can seriously damage the relationship.

As always, communication is key. Make your partner part of any discussion related to your priorities and goals and make sure they are currently getting enough attention. And remember, couples therapy can work wonders!

The Need for Space

In some ways, the next issue is the opposite of priority problems. In some relationships, the hot button issue is that one (or both) partners are not getting enough space.

No matter how long you've been in a relationship, there are times that each of you will want to do your own thing. This includes spending time with different groups of friends, pursuing different hobbies, or just hanging in your own living room and chilling out.

If one partner doesn't focus on their own needs and give the other partner some occasional space, it can really suffocate the entire relationship.

Self-Esteem Issues

It's very common for one partner to ask another how they look in a new outfit or with a new haircut. However, it's important to identify if these questions are masking some serious self-esteem issues.

Some people have problems with self-esteem that date back to their childhood. For example, someone who once struggled with their weight may always worry that they will end up packing pounds on once more.

If your partner suffers from self-esteem issues, be sure not to say anything about their appearance or other issues. In addition to avoiding these emotional triggers, be sure to go out of your way to praise them each day and build up their self-esteem.

Sex and Intimacy

The last hot button issue is actually two topics rolled into one. We're talking, of course, about sex and intimacy.

Frequency of sex is likely to vary over time, especially in long-term relationships. However, some partners may worry that frequent refusal of their sexual advances means their partner is no longer interested in them.

Typically, a lack of libido is caused by things like stress, exhaustion, or even changes in medication. Even a new birth control prescription can drastically affect libido for some women!

If your relationship sex has decreased, it's important to have a conversation about why and to try to reach some kind of compromise. And remember that sex and intimacy are separate things: it's still possible to show kindness, affection, and love without having sex.
