Understanding Self-Harm: A Workshop for Parents

Worried about your child engaging in self-harm? Not sure how to talk to your son or daughter about it? The workshop provides  a space for parents to gain evidence-based knowledge, receive awareness and support, and bring forward their own questions. This workshop is suitable for parents with children age 11+.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Increase your understanding of self-harm and learn how to talk to your child about it

  • Gain positive approaches and strategies to support young people engaging in self harm

  • Learn where you can get help for your child and how to gain support as a parent

At the same time, Malak Kamel, M.A., will lead a discussion about:

  • The difference between self-harm and suicidal behaviour

  • The links between self-harm, eating disorders, and cyber-bullying

  • The therapeutic skills and interventions used to treat and respond to self-harm

Throughout the workshop you will hear multiple examples and perspectives from others; we ask that you provide others with openness, confidentiality, and respect, allowing for a collaborative and supportive discussion to speak freely about what matters most to you.
