What is depression?
Depression is more than feeling sad. People who are depressed usually experience several changes to how they feel, think, and behave.
Some common symptoms include:
Low mood (feeling sad, or down for most of the day)
Lack of energy (fatigue)
Change in appetite (eating more or less than usual)
Sleep disturbances (sleeping more or less than usual; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep)
Loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed
Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
Difficulty concentrating or thinking
Many people experience these symptoms without being depressed. You might be depressed if these symptoms persist for two or more weeks, and are not caused by a clear trigger such as death of a loved one, substance use, or health issues.
How is depression treated?
We offer an evidence-based treatment for depression, based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It is a short-term treatment, with clients usually requiring between 4-12 sessions. We aim to make ourselves redundant, by equipping you with the coping strategies you need. Remember, the 1st step is often the hardest - it’s OK to ask for help.
What do we do during a session?
We work on identifying the link between how we think, feel, and behave. We then work on changing these unhealthy and unhelpful patterns. You will be given tasks between sessions to help us identify which strategies work best for you.
